Freaky and Fun
Since I was a child I
loved all things freaky, unfortunately I never really got to celebrate
Halloween in Africa, but thank goodness for scary movies.
I grew up on things
like Goosebumps, Are You Afraid of the Dark and many other horror movies that
children probable should never see. I just loved the genre, especially if the
shows are movies were targeting kids. That is why I have so much love for the
new Jack Black movie, The House with a
Clock in its Walls.
The film has all the
creepy, scary, and fantasy elements of a tween horror film and it is all mixed
up with a little drama and comedy. Based on a 1973 book of the same name, the
film definitely has some fun elements to it.
Critics felt the film
did not live up to its full potential, and although this might be true, it is
still a fun story to explore. All movies have their shortcomings and
unfortunately so does this one, but one thing that stands out is the cast.
Jack Black’s, Cate
Blanchett’s and Owen Vaccaro’s characters simply makes the movie something
exciting. I have to warn that some scenes in the movie might be a little too
scary for the younger viewers, but others might like it.
In the movie
ten-year-old Lewis (Owen) goes to live with his uncle, Jonathan (Jack) in a
house that contains a mysterious tick-tock noise. He finds out that Jonathan
and their neighbour Mrs Zimmerman (Cate) are practitioners of the mystic arts.
Lewis accidentally wakes the dead in the town and reveals all the town’s
secrets.
My Verdict
The movie is not
perfect, but at least it brings a few fresh stories to the cinema. It is story
filled with fun and freaky elements, which means it definitely has an audience.
I would definitely recommend the movie to all fantasy and horror lovers.
