Groundhog Day on Steroids

This might be my final theatrical movie review for a while, as I will be avoiding the cinema until the Corona Virus scares die out.
Groundhog Day is one of those movies we all love, Bill Murray relives the same day over and over and that’s kind of what happens to Vin Diesel in Bloodshot – but with a lot more violence. The Valiant Comics movie brings the hero Ray Garrison to life on the silver screen.
I don’t really know much about the comic character’s background, but I have read up on him. The movie however was not exactly what I had expected. It is kind of good, but it does not really leave a lasting impression.
In other words, it is a great popcorn action flick, but that’s all it is. The writers did take some time developing certain characters, while others are just there to fill up some spots. Diesel does an amazing job as Dom Toretto with superpowers and Eiza González as KT is probably my favourite character.
The movie seriously suffers story-wise and it seemed to be in a hurry to establish some characters, which just makes it feel like a forced origin story. Guy Pierce is good as the villain, but you kind of saw the big “twist” coming like 15 minutes into the movie.
The editors and VFX team could have tried harder with covering up the Cape Town number plates and shots. The movie apparently takes place in Europe and some scenes look great, but why would a South African police car patrol a street in England?
Other than that the movie is probably one of the best of the year so far and since we won’t be seeing other blockbusters for a while, then it definitely is worth the watch. Other than the above mentioned criticism, I think the movie did well in establishing a Valiant Cinematic Universe.
After he and his wife are murdered, marine Ray Garrison is resurrected by a team of scientists. Enhanced with nanotechnology, he becomes a superhuman, biotech killing machine - Bloodshot. As Ray first trains with fellow super-soldiers, he cannot recall anything from his former life. But when his memories flood back and he remembers the man that killed both him and his wife, he breaks out of the facility to get revenge, only to discover that there's more to the conspiracy than he thought.

My Verdict
Since there aren’t a lot of new movies to watch, this one will definitely entertain you. It is fun to watch if you aren’t too critical of movies. I will definitely give it another watch soon. I will also release a video review of it soon. All in all, the movie is worth the watch; just remember to take the necessary precautions for COVID-19 if you go to the theatre.

My Rating: 6 out of 10 – Could Have Been Better

I would also like to wish a speedy recovery to all those who were diagnosed with the Corona Virus.
