When Two Alphas Collide
It’s the team we have
been waiting for. On the left we have Dwayne ‘The Rock Johnson’ and on the
right we have Jason Statham.
Two kings of action
are forced to team-up in the Fast and Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw and it’s
a movie you do not want to miss. The film is a true popcorn blockbuster, filled
with high flying action, numerous jokes and a romantic relationship at the
centre of it all.
To be honest the movie
took me by surprise with its great ensemble of cameos, I do not want to give
away too much, but I’m pretty sure people will enjoy them a lot. As with other
Fast and Furious films, the whole story is set around a chase. First the good
guy chases the bad guy, then the bad guy chases the good guy. You know, the
typical action flick.
It is however more
than that, it expands the universe of the F&F franchise and proves that the
producers and writers still have a lot of stories to tell and characters to
expand on. Unfortunately no big names from the main franchise make an
appearance, but with the Johnson and Statham you hardly miss them.
The movie starts off
at a fast pace and it is quiet enjoyable, but unfortunately it does not slow
down. It feels as if the writers and director were trying to cram in a whole
trilogy into one film. Some made enjoy this, while others may think it is a bit
too much.
Idris Elba’s Brixton
starts out as what I hope would be a really good villain, but he was a little dull
in the end. The third act is also one of my favourite parts from the movie,
because it shows a little culture and that family thing from all previous
F&F movies.
Ever since hulking
lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America's Diplomatic Security Service,
and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative,
first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body
blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically
enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious
bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and
fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be
Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down
the only guy who might be badder than themselves.
My Verdict
The movie is really
enjoyable and I am a big fan of both leads. It falls short of Fast Five, but it
is surprisingly funny and I love that. Fans of the franchise will definitely enjoy
it. So go get your tickets at Ster-Kinekor Namibia today and enjoy some hulking
martial arts action. Check out my YouTube review video of the movie: https://youtu.be/NcYuKTDglF8
