Prey or Predator

The new Predator movie is a mixture of nostalgia and modern day action films, which unfortunately do no really work together all the time.

The new movie is simply titled, “The Predator” and it brings back a lot of childhood memories (yes, I watched the first two as a young boy). I still remember how Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover took on the aliens hunters.

I know the film did not score raving reviews, but I am just glad we can see the Predators back on the silver screen again. The trailer looked great, the visual effects were stunning and I walked into the theater with high expectations. I unfortunately had to leave my local mall with disappointment all over my face.

The movie is not bad, but it is not great either. Some plot elements work, while others do not. I am however pleased with some casting choices, as it brings a little humour into the fold. The story is however not strong enough to carry all the weight of the star power.

The action set-pieces do look great, but some are just underwhelming. So do not be like me, and go with high expectations. The Predator is still a fun film to watch and it is not all bad, but I really wish it would have been better.

The movie’s synopsis reads as follows: From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home. The universe's most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and an evolutionary biologist can prevent the end of the human race.

My Verdict

I definitely enjoyed the film; it brings something new to the sci-fi genre, even if it is not enough. It definitely is not the must-watch movie of the season (I think Venom might take that spot), but it is also not a total bomb. So if you like action, sci-fi, light horror, thriller or even comedies, then this movie might just work for you.
