Father of failure
I love gangster or
mafia movies; I have re-watch The Godfather and Scarface more than I can count
and that is way I was excited about Gotti.
My excitement was not
long-lived, though. To be honest, the movie really surprised me, but not in a
good way at all. The story of John Gotti, the infamous New York City mobster
was a movie that was waiting to be made, but unfortunately the writers and director
gave us a total bomb.
The movie had
potential and I was excited to see John Travolta in the lead, but that was not
enough to safe the failure. In the first place the movie was in development
hell for several years, which probably hammered its quality.
Critics all around the
world panned the film and I guess they were all right. To make matters worse,
the movie currently has an approval rating of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. I myself
did not enjoy a single second of the film, although Travolta’s performance was
not too bad.
The fans however have
a different opinion, so maybe you will enjoy the movie. I do not think it is
worth the watch, but fans of mafia and gangster films might find it
entertaining.
The movie revolves on
Gotti, who was raised on the streets of New York. He found his way into the
Gambino crime family and eventually had the boss removed to become the head of
the family. His wife asked only one thing from him: to never expose their
children to his profession. But he broke the vow, and John Jr. took his place
as his father’s Capo.
My Verdict
I truly loathed the
film and prayed that it will end. I was really hoping all the critics were
wrong, but unfortunately they were spot on. It is a shame to see Travolta
suffer under such a horrible script.
Rating: 0.5/10 – Total Bomb
