The Most Anticipated Movies of 2020

The new year is upon us and with that comes great new movies and TV shows.
Last year proved to one of the biggest in box office history and it is easy to see why. We got great films like Joker, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, The Lion King, and so many others. As you can see Disney was the king of the movie theatre, but will they repeat that this year?
This year really looks great on paper and January will kick-off the year with one of the most anticipated movies ever. I have a long list of movies I look forward to watch at Ster-Kinekor, but I had to cut it down to 20, and here they are:

20. Free Guy
Ryan Reynolds and video games have been a hit in Hollywood lately. Reynolds will this time be a background video character who “wakes up”. The movie seems to be filled with action and Ryan’s comedic style and to be honest, I look forward to it.

19. Top Gun: Maverick
Nostalgia hit the right spot with this one, here is an 80s movie sequel we have been hoping for. Tom Cruise is set to return and hopefully he will once again blow our minds. The movie probably was not necessary, but here we are and I kind of look forward to it.

18. Bloodshot
Blood, more blood and some nanotechnology. Vin Diesel takes on the role of Valiant Comic’s Bloodshot and fans have been raving about the trailer. This looks to be another action filled comic book movie and we all love comic book movies.

17. West Side Story
Here we have a play being translated onto the big screen; fingers crossed that it will not be another Cats disaster. Director Steven Spielberg is at the helm and Ansel Elgort will lead the cast. That is duo that can make things look great, I just hope it will be.

16. In the Heights
Another musical making its way to the silver screen and this one is directed by Jon M. Chu with Lin-Manuel Miranda producing. Seems like a good combination to me. I do not really enjoy musical, but after The Greatest Showman I might consider watching more musical. (Thank you, Hugh Jackman)

15. Dolittle
Doctor Dolittle and his animal friends are ready for a voyage in this CGI/live action remake. Just don’t expect anything similar to the Eddie Murphy movies. This movie will stick closer to the source material with Robert Downey Jnr. taking on the titular role.

14. Bill & Ted Face the Music
Keanusance is bleeding over into 2020 and I am just happy to see Bill and Ted go on another adventure. The characters are now adults with responsibilities, but that does not mean they cannot have a little fun along the way.

13. Bad Boys For Life
The first big movie is a movie we have been waiting 17 years for, most people probably don’t even know these characters anymore. Thankfully, those of us who loved the first two will be filling the theatres to see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence team again.

12. Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Nostalgia is amazing and Hollywood knows how to capitalise one it. We have been waiting years for a real Ghostbusters follow up and we are finally getting one. The original cast is set to return with some new characters. Jason Reitman, the son of the original movie’s director, Ivan, will be at the helm. So I really have high hopes for this one.

11. Sonic the Hedgehog
Here is the thing about this movie, it has Jim Carrey. I love Jim Carrey. Another thing about it is that the filmmakers listened to the fans when they complained about Sonic’s design. They went back into the post-production and gave us a Sonic that reminds me of my childhood. I definitely look forward to it. I just hope fans will bring their part to thank the studio.

10. Soul
Pixar never disappoints and hope they will not start now. This time they are going to explore music and the human soul. I do not want to give away too much, but the trailer made me really excited.

9. A Quiet Place: Part II
The second part of the “silent” horror movie series will be in theatres soon and I hope it pays off. Sequel movies are not always that successful, but sometimes they can top their predecessor. John Krasinski is once again director on this project.

8. Dune
This movie promises to be an Avengers level film with a huge ensemble that includes: Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem. This is the novels third adaptation and so far it looks great.

7. Tenet
Action, Sci-Fi, time travel and Christopher Nolan, that seems like an awesome combination to me. This new Nolan work looks amazing, I saw the trailer and I cannot wait to watch the full story unfold on the big screen.

6. Godzilla vs Kong
The king of the monsters and the king of Skull Island will finally meet and battle it out for the top title. These kaijus will have a score to settle and once again humanity will be in the middle of it all. This is the stuff legends are made of and we will get to witness it.

5. Fast and Furious 9
Seems like there is no slowing down Dom Toretto’s team and this time the family grows even bigger. After the success of Hobbs and Shaw the team will face a new foe and they will need even faster cars. The movie will be out in a few months, we are just waiting for the trailer.

4. Wonder Woman 1984
Princess Diana Prince is back and so is her lover, Steve (how did that happen). Anyway, I am so excited to see Wonder Woman in action again. This time see will have multiple adversaries and none of them will be German soldiers.

3. No Time to Die
Bond 25 will be the last time Daniel Craig will step into the role of 007. I hope he goes out with a bang. James Bond has always been one of my favourite characters and I have grown fond of Craig’s rendition.

2. The Eternals
Marvel’s second movie after the Infinity Saga will bring new characters to the foreground. The movie is set in a span of 7000 years and tells the story of aliens created to defend. The movie has a stellar cast and hopefully will take the MCU to higher heights.

1. Black Widow
Natasha is finally getting her own movie! Black Widow has been a breakout character since Iron Man 2 and now she has her own solo movie, after she died though. This will also be the first movie to be released after the Infinity Saga, but it takes place during the saga. I know that is a little confusing, but let’s just be happy we are finally getting a movie we have been asking for.
