Crazy about my phone
We are so addicted to
our cellphones that we sometimes forget to take a seat and just look at the
world around us.
I know, I started this
review on a serious note; Jexi the
new Adam Devine comedy takes a look at the effects of smartphone addiction. As
a young my phone plays an important role in my life every single day, so I can
really relate.
The comedy thriller
shows what might happen if your phone’s AI got feelings and the outcome is
messed up and funny. This movie was panned by critics worldwide and as a critic
I believe they are right, but as a casual moviegoer I loved it.
It is quirky, weird,
fun, geeky, everything you want in a romantic comedy. The story is flawed, the
acting is not the best and some of the humour may fall flat, but it is fun. The
first act is quite funny, while the second act is romantic, but the final act
is kind of underwhelming.
Overall it might not
be the funniest movie of the year, but it sure caught my attention and all for
the right reason. I just needed something that could entertain me without a
heavy loaded story or a huge CGI battle and Jexi
does that.
It is a movie for all
casual moviegoers. It is something for the everyday man and I do not believe it
was created to be this big cinematic masterpiece. It is unlike the rest of the
movies at the cinema at the moment.
Phil has a major
dependency issue -- he's addicted to his cellphone. He has no friends and his
love life is nonexistent. Forced to upgrade to a new phone, Phil soon learns
that the latest model comes with Jexi -- an artificial intelligence life coach,
virtual assistant and cheerleader. With its help, he begins to get a real life.
But as he becomes less dependent on the phone, Jexi starts to morph into a tech
nightmare that's determined to keep Phil all to itself.
The Verdict
The movie is a
beautiful mess and might not be for everyone. It is definitely not for
children. If you are looking for some weird comedy to relax to then this might
just be what you need. Do not go in expecting too much and you will not be
disappointed.
