Raising Hell(Boy)
I thought 2018 had a
lot of superheroes, but it seems like 2019 might beat that record and the new Hellboy film is adding to that tally.
I remember watching Shazam! a
while ago and I remember wanting to be a superhero again and to just enjoy what
the genre has to offer. Fast forward to now and Hellboy the movie makes me hesitate again.
The reboot is a complete failure when compared to the first two Ron
Perlman led movies. It is just a total mess, with missed matched sequences. I
did enjoy David Harbour’s performance as the titular character; he brought a
certain kind of depth and humour the Cambion from Hell.
So maybe the movie is not a total a failure. Sure it did not gather the
critics praise or box office numbers, but it can be a lot of fun at times. The
humour is a much needed element and of course the fact that it is more gore and
violence (something that might not impress everyone).
Overall the movie is watchable at times for everyone, the jokes serve as
a good distraction from the messy storyline and the characters are meh, with a
few scene stealing moments and entertaining heroes and supporting characters.
Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the
worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on
revenge.
My Verdict
Just do not go in expecting a Marvel-type of superhero film, not even a
Deadpool-type. Go in and forget everything you know about superheroes,
otherwise you will just be disappointed. The movie is watchable, but might not
be everyone’s cup of coffee. It contains elements that some might believe do
not belong on the silver screen. And please leave your children at home, take
them to go watch Captain Marvel or Shazam instead.
My Rating: 4.1/10 – A Failure
