The Fighting Angel
The biggest surprise
of 2019 so far is Alita: Battle Angel.
I went into the theatre not expecting much, but my mind was easily changed
after the first action scene.
Alita is not your
typical teenage girl on screen, she is so much more. This film is one of the best
Manga adaptations I have seen in years. It delivers all the blows and kicks and
still finds time to add some heart to the story.
What makes this movie so
unique is the fact that everyone thought it would fail with audiences, but it
was the total opposite. It is not the perfect movie, but it gives you the
blockbuster entertainment you want from a CGI-heavy film.
The story feels a
little congested with plots to setup sequels, but that can easily be forgiven.
Rosa Salazar is exceptional in the titular role; unfortunately not all the
casting choices were on point. Christoph Waltz as Doctor Ido is fairly
enjoyable, but his character still felt like he lacked something (perhaps more
screen time).
Some characters who
are key to the emotional plots of the film are easily forgettable, but they
leave their mark here and there. Apart from that, the story is a fun to watch.
The action scenes are top notch and very memorable.
I really hope the
movie gets the sequels it deserves, because we all want to see how Alita’s
story ends. This is definitely a job well done by both James Cameron, as
producer and Robert Rodriguez, as the director.
Set several centuries
in the future, the abandoned Alita is found in the scrap yard of Iron City by
Ido, a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his
clinic. When Alita awakens, she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have
any recognition of the world she finds herself in. As Alita learns to navigate
her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her
from her mysterious past.
My Verdict
The best way to enjoy
this movie is to go in with low expectations and it will definitely blow your
mind. If you are a fan of anime or manga then this is something you would not
want to miss. Overall this is a great watch; it made me really happy for a
moment. I would recommend it for all movie-lovers.
My Rating: 8.3/10 – Love
