Looking Through Broken Glass
The M. Knight Shyamalan superhero saga came to a close with the much
anticipated Glass this past weekend.
It was the big twist we have all been waiting for; we were waiting
anxiously to see how the unbreakable guy, the genius and the dude with DID will
end this saga. Unfortunately the big Shyamalan twist was a complete flop.
The last film in the Eastrail 177 Trilogy had a strong start, reintroducing
us to both hero, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) from Unbreakable and the villain
Kevin Wendell Crumb/The Horde (James McAvoy) from Split. It slowly builds up to
them meeting the genius Elijah Price aka Mister Glass.
It then progresses slowly with unnecessary plots, but at least we get to
see how smart Glass really is and we finally get to meet more of Kevin’s 23
personalities. David also known as The Overseer is the talk of the town,
because of his heroic deeds. We also get to see him take out a couple of petty criminals.
The movie is at much smaller scale than most superhero films, but at
least it has enough time for character building. James McAvoy once again steals
the show with his acting range, but Bruce Willis is more like a duller Batman.
The story is strong, but gets weaker as the movie progresses and certain
characters were really not needed to convey the full story. In the end the
movie is good enough to stand on its own, but definitely is not Shyamalan’s
best work.
In my opinion as a fan, I think it is a great movie to start the year
off with and it definitely is a must watch, before we get overrun by bigger
blockbusters. The movie might not be absolutely perfect, but it has its great
cinematic moments.
Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s
superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the
shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical
to both men.
My Verdict
The movie is fun, although I hoped for a bigger twist and a better
ending, the rest of the story is still good enough to safe the entire film.
Hopefully Shyamalan decides to continue the Unbreakable-saga. I think you will
miss out on a good film if you do not make your way to the theatre right now.
My Rating: 7.2/10 – Really Good
