Just a bad day
We all have off our
off or just simply awfully bad days. No matter who you are, life will still
coming knocking at your door and that is exactly what happened at the El
Royale.
Bad Times at the El Royale is a neo-noir thriller that will make you wish
you could meet all the interesting characters. The movie is unlike anything
that’s currently on the silver screen and that is probably its biggest
advantage.
Drew Goddard outdid
himself once again. The screenplay and direction is simply magnificent. The
movie has a really long time and the pacing is kind of slow, but that can
easily be forgiven once the stronger threads of the movie come into play.
The acting is another
exceptional element of the film. Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Chris Hemsworth,
Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Cailee Spaeny. Nick Offerman and Lewis Pullman make
up the movie’s all-star cast.
It is a fun film to
watch with various twists and a storyline that gets better by the minute.
Everything about the movie is smart and all its flaws can easily be missed. I
just have to say, that this movie might not be for everyone. Just because
“Thor” is in the movie, does not mean you get to see him be all heroic.
The film centres
around the El Royale, a run-down hotel that sits on the border between
California and Nevada. It soon becomes a seedy battleground when seven
strangers – a cleric, a soul singer, a travelling salesman, two sisters and
Billy Lee, a cult leader – converge on a fateful night for one last shot at
redemption before everything goes wrong.
My Verdict
The movie is unique in
the sense that it gives general moviegoers something other than a
straightforward action or drama flick. It brings something new to the table,
something that should be appreciated. If you can sit through the nearly 2 and
half hours runtime then you might just appreciate the movie as much as I do.
My Rating: 8/10 – Really
Good
